Cooking Class

“One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well.” Virginia Woolf

We have developed a Friday night tradition of ordering pizza and watching movies. Fine….movie singular and sometimes not even that. I get up every morning at 5:30 to beat Lima traffic to work. Also, I teach--ever heard of teacher tired? It's a thing! I love the idea of watching a whole movie but Kevin says I rarely make it. I disagree!

Anyway, Fridays are wonderful! Movie. Pizza. Lima Delivery is an app that makes that happen. Kevin is an expert at that call from the doorman: “Pizza? Si!!” Did I mention it is Papa John’s? I have rediscovered my college love of garlic sauce! I am going to drown a lobster in that stuff when we get home in July!

So as much as I love Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are better! Tea and books and I am one happy girl.  I do love my job! I love teaching and I especially love teaching at Roosevelt. My twenty kiddos are fun! They are so intently curious about the world and so inspired to learn to read. It isn't everywhere that you ask parents to share their culture with the class and this happens:

The parents brought food from the mountains, the sea, and the jungle for the class to sample.  Their whole set up was amazing and the kids had a blast painting Toritos de Pucará (ceramic bulls) and playing Peruvian flutes and drums.   Did I mention Peruvian food is amazing?  One can dine very well here! So, I was inspired to take a cooking class and it wasn't hard to convince Kevin to go too.

We went to Sky Kitchen and Diego taught us how to make Causa, Ceviche, Lomo Saltado, and Picarones. It was a blast! A couple from Australia joined us. Obviously you get eat what you make!

Causa--layers of potato, chicken salad, and avocado
Ceviche! I made this!!

Lomo Saltado--a very typical Peruvian dish
Picarones--a fried dough made of sweet potato and drizzled with molasses

We have plans to sample more Peruvian cuisine in the months to come.  However, Papa John's will continue to fatten us up every Friday!
